Kayla's Birthday

My one and only daughter, Kayla, was born on January 5, 1995. She doesn't celebrate it. It's a sad day for her. Poor girl.

Her cousins come to my house to celebrate the new year every year. That's when they bond and stay up late talking and having fun. Their Moms and I also stay up late playing tong-its. Fun, fun, fun for everyone. We all watched the fireworks last December 31. We planned to go to the 5th floor deck to have a 360-degree view of the city but we chickened out. Some fireworks exploded low so my husband said it might not be safe. Besides, the smoke was so thick we couldn't really see far. We just lined up on the 3rd and 4th floor stairs and watched the lights from behind the safety of the thick windows. Chikoy and Cukay, too. They barked at the dancing fireworks.

Come January 3 or 4 (depending on the day) they all set off for home to get ready for school. Waaah! Kayla weeps and begs them to stay for her birthday each time. It's heartbreaking.

I take her shopping to cheer her up.
