Animal Cruelty - Abuse in General

I browsed through the website of PAWS yesterday (www.paws.org.ph). It surprised me that such a facility actually existed in the Philippines considering there is so much depression and oppression in the population that I didn't think anyone would bother about the numerous stray cats and dogs. My friend, Tessa, had told me about it about a year ago but that one was in the USA so it was good to know that there are people who have not forgotten to care for the animals.

The stories on successful adoptions were so touching. They have before and after pictures and the recovery of the animals were remarkable. Another friend, David, and I once talked about animal cruelty as compared to human abuse. We get really riled when we hear about how some dogs are mistreated more so than people (read adults) not just because we are heartless people but because pets are fiercely loyal and there really isn't much that they can do while people are thinking beings with a will of their own and have the power to save themselves. Of course, it is unspeakable when children are abused because they are helpless, too, and they are not included in the general nonchalance toward abuse. Sometimes, when I look at my babbies resplendently splayed on my bed with their paws in the air, I imagine them owned by someone who would hurt them and I am filled with horror. Can you imagine what it's like to kick a puppy? When I discipline my dogs I feel as much remorse as when I discipline Kayla.

I should head over to PAWS to bring some supplies and convince Marcus to adopt some to live on his farm in Isabela. I wonder if I can ask them to rescue the labrador that is chained to a tree across the street... I think he tries to talk to my babbies because they bark at each other.

Chikoy: Hey, why are you chained to that tree? Are you being punished?
Labrador: I don't know. I don't know what I did.
Chikoy: You must have done something wrong! Where's your Mommy?
Labrador: What's a mommy?
Chikoy: Mommy! Like my human! You ever see that woman who goes to the office in the morning?
Labrador: That's a mommy?
Chikoy: Yeah! She loves me and Cukay and Bawzer and Mojee. She gives us a bath and brushes our hair and kisses us and embraces us and makes sure we are healthy.
Labrador: I wish I had a Mommy...
